Professor Itsejuwa Esanjumi Sagay (SAN) is a renowned Nigerian legal luminary, academic, and human rights activist. He was born on the 20th of December in the year 1946 in Warri, Delta State, Nigeria. Sagay is known for his exceptional legal expertise, advocacy for good governance, and commitment to social justice.
Sagay attended King’s College, Lagos, before proceeding to the University of Ibadan, where he obtained a Bachelor of Law degree in 1967. He went further to bag a Master of Law degree from the same University. He rounded off his legal education at the prestigious Downing College, Cambridge, where he was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Law.
In his early legal career, Professor Sagay worked as a Lecturer in the Faculty of Law at the University of Benin. His quest for social justice and good governance inspired his engagement in pro-democracy activities, which earned him the label of an activist. He was a key figure in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), the umbrella body of pro-democracy groups, which played an instrumental role in the restoration of democracy in Nigeria in 1999.
