When the Frank family, along with four others, went into hiding in the secret annex above Otto Frank’s office building in Amsterdam in July 1942, Miep Gies became one of their lifelines to the outside world. She and a few trusted colleagues, including Bep Voskuijl, Johannes Kleiman, and Victor Kugler, provided food, supplies, and emotional support to the hidden occupants.

Despite the constant threat of discovery, Miep Gies remained committed to helping the Frank family and their companions for over two years until their arrest on August 4, 1944. After the arrest, she discovered and preserved Anne Frank’s diary, hoping to return it to her when she came back. Unfortunately, Anne Frank died in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945, and only her father, Otto Frank, survived.

After the war, Miep Gies returned the diary to Otto Frank, who published it under the title “The Diary of a Young Girl,” which went on to become one of the most widely read books in the world, shedding light on the horrors of the Holocaust from a uniquely personal perspective.
