Ada Lovelace, born in 1815, was an English mathematician and writer widely regarded as the world’s first computer programmer. She is best known for her work on Charles Babbage’s proposed mechanical general-purpose computer, the Analytical Engine.
Lovelace was born Augusta Ada Byron, the daughter of the famous Romantic poet Lord Byron and his wife, Annabella Milbanke. Ada’s parents separated shortly after her birth, and her father left England. Her mother, who was concerned about her daughter’s inherited temperament from her father, provided Ada with a rigorous education in mathematics and science, subjects that were considered unusual for women at the time.
At the age of 17, Ada met Charles Babbage, a mathematician and inventor who was working on the design of the Analytical Engine, a proposed mechanical general-purpose computer. Ada’s work on the Analytical Engine consisted of translating an article on the machine written by an Italian engineer, Luigi Menabrea, and adding her own extensive notes, which included a method for using the machine to calculate Bernoulli numbers.
Ada’s notes on the Analytical Engine, published in 1843, are considered the world’s first computer program. Her insights into the machine’s potential went far beyond Babbage’s own vision, as she recognized the potential for computers to manipulate symbols beyond just numbers. She also saw that the machine had the potential to create music and graphics, in addition to performing mathematical calculations.
