Adewale “Wally” Adeyemo is a distinguished Nigerian-American government official who has made significant contributions to the field of economics and international relations. Born on May 20, 1981, in Ibadan, Nigeria, Adeyemo was raised in Southern California by his parents, a teacher and a nurse, along with his two younger siblings.

Adeyemo’s educational journey began with his graduation from Eisenhower High School in Rialto, California, in 1999. He then pursued a bachelor’s degree in arts from the University of California, Berkeley, which he obtained in 2004. Recognizing his passion for law and its potential to create positive change, Adeyemo went on to earn a juris doctor degree from Yale Law School in 2009.

After completing his legal education, Adeyemo embarked on a career path that blended his legal expertise with his passion for economics and public service. He started as a law clerk for Judge Robert M. Parker on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Following this, he joined the prominent law firm Clifford Chance LLP, where he gained experience in mergers and acquisitions and finance transactions.

In 2013, Adeyemo’s impressive skills and dedication caught the attention of the Obama administration, and he was appointed as a special assistant to the president and deputy director of the National Economic Council. In this influential role, he provided valuable advice to President Obama on various economic matters, including the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, the Affordable Care Act, and the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.

Adeyemo’s exceptional capabilities led to his appointment as the deputy national security advisor for international economics in 2015. As part of this position, he spearheaded the coordination of the administration’s economic policy with other countries. Adeyemo represented President Obama at high-level international gatherings such as the G7 and G20, where he played a crucial role in shaping economic discussions and negotiations.

In 2017, Adeyemo transitioned from his role in the Obama administration to become the inaugural president of the Obama Foundation. Adeyemo’s remarkable achievements and expertise garnered the attention of President-elect Joe Biden, who nominated him to serve as the deputy secretary of the treasury in 2020. After being confirmed by the Senate in March 2021, Adeyemo assumed his new responsibilities. As the deputy secretary of the treasury, he oversees the day-to-day operations of the department and plays a key role in implementing the economic policies of the Biden administration. Adeyemo’s position also grants him membership in the president’s cabinet, allowing him to contribute to crucial decision-making processes.

Outside of his professional endeavors, Adeyemo leads a fulfilling personal life. He is married to Omolola Adeyemo, a pediatrician, and together they have two children.
