Nikola Tesla was a Serbian-American inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, and futurist who is best known for his contributions to the development of the modern alternating current (AC) electrical system.

Tesla was born on July 10, 1856, in Smiljan, Croatia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He was the fourth of five children born to Serbian Orthodox priest Milutin Tesla and his wife Djuka Mandic. Tesla received his early education in Croatia and later studied at the Austrian Polytechnic in Graz. After moving to the United States in 1884, he worked for Thomas Edison’s company, but the two inventors eventually had a falling out due to disagreements over the use of direct current (DC) versus AC.

Tesla’s breakthrough came in the late 1880s when he developed a practical AC motor and transformer. This technology was crucial for the widespread adoption of AC electrical systems, which are still used today in homes, businesses, and industries. Tesla also made significant contributions to the development of wireless communication, X-ray technology, and the modern radio.

Despite his numerous contributions to science and technology, Tesla was never able to achieve the financial success of his contemporaries like Edison and George Westinghouse. He was known for his eccentric behavior and had a reputation for being reclusive and obsessive about his work.

In later years, Tesla’s financial situation deteriorated, and he died in poverty on January 7, 1943, in New York City. However, his legacy has endured, and he is widely regarded as one of the most brilliant inventors of all time. Today, his name is synonymous with innovation and creativity, and his ideas continue to inspire scientists, engineers, and futurists around the world.
